History’s Greatest Dogs Part 1: Lucca The German Shepherd

Lucca was a German shepherd who deployed with the marine corp during the Iraq/Afghanistan war.

What makes Lucca a legend?

Tasked with sniffing out bombs and IEDs, no fatalities occurred on her watch – not a single one in 400 patrols. Lucca was a true soldier, and survived losing her leg to an IED blast in 2012. While Lucca passed in 2018, she left an indelible mark on the people in her life.

The US military awarded Lucca a purple heart, and the British army gave her the Iron Cross: the highest honor in the British military. In 2019, Lucca became one of the first winners of the Animals in War and Peace medal of bravery, cementing Lucca’s legacy as one of history’s greatest dogs. For those who are interested, there is a book out titled Top Dog: The Story of Marine Hero Lucca that covers the life Lucca in-depth, providing a vivid recounting of her 400 missions overseas.

Regardless of how you feel about the Iraq/Afghanistan wars, we can all agree that Lucca had only the best intentions at heart. This selfless german shepherd saved many lives from what would have been a senseless death. Rest in puppy heaven Lucca, and thank you for your service.
