Vitamin D for Dogs
Vitamin D for Dogs at DoggyD.dog
Vitamin D is essential for dogs. Like humans and many other pets, canines need plenty of vitamin D. But unlike humans, canines don’t make vitamin D in their bodies. Vitamin D in dogs must be ingested as a part of their diet.
Imagine your dog — especially your senior dog — as a healthy wild wolf. If he were running wild in a pack, he’d get enough precious vitamin D devouring his prey. Fun fact, studies have shown even grey wolves in the Arctic get their vitamin D from their main prey, caribou. (These majestic, elk-like creatures get vitamin D in their bloodstream by eating lichen, a mossy plant that makes up 71% of their diet.)
Vitamin D can prevent a host of uncomfortable health conditions, and keep your dog happier, healthier, and more active for years to come.
That’s why a high-quality vitamin D supplement is so important to the health of your canine companion.
What is Vitamin D?
According to the US National Institute for Health (NIH), vitamin D — also called calciferol or cholecalciferol — is a “fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in a few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. [In humans, it is] produced endogenously [meaning, in the body] when ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis.”
Also, per NIH, sufficient concentrations of vitamin D can prevent:
- Rickets and osteomalacia (a disease that causes weakened, soft bones that may break easily)
- Hypocalcemia (too much calcium in the blood.)
- Furthermore, dogs with low levels of vitamin D might suffer from a variety of conditions, like:
- Gastrointestinal disorders (tummy troubles, gassiness, diarrhea, ulcers, etc.)
- Congestive heart failure
- Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (when the small intestine cannot function to digest food)
- Some types of cancer
- Liver disease
- And chronic kidney disease
Dr. John Cannell has also published research exploring how vitamin D reduces inflammation in dogs. Quality vitamin D supplements for dogs can improve their skin health, joint health, bone health, and more.

Exclusively Designed Supplements for Dogs
An Ounce of Prevention = A Pound of Cure
Dogs cannot produce vitamin D from the sun. They used to get their vitamin D from the meat of their prey, but they no longer hunt and hence do not get enough vitamin D. DoggyD helps you optimize your fuzzy friend's vitamin D levels, without oversaturating their other nutrient needs.
